Class of '92 (Acrobat .pda file))

The following news was compiled by Jason Redi:

Derrick Chin starts out this correspondence with some baby news! --
Lori just gave birth to Lauren Kathleen on July 26. After fixing up their condo,
they sold it for a nice profit and used the money to buy a house in Wyckoff, NJ in late May. (Pets.com would have been a much better investment - Ed.) Now they are spending lots of time, effort, and money to fix up the house and prepare it for the new baby. Lori graduated from Columbia Business School in May and will be starting work at Kraft Foods in the fall. Derrick is still working at Framework and the company continues to due well which is pretty remarkable given the current tech environment. Derrick's new info is 152 Elmwood Pl, Wyckoff, NJ 07481, (201) 560-0180

The Carlbachers have nothing wonderfully exciting to report from the Carlbachers. Carl is still at BD and still working on projects related to scalpels and blades. 18 months ago his reporting relationship changed to their Utah facility in the Salt Lake Valley, so he's been using every excuse in the book to plan "business" trips during the winter months. Apparently, there's a lot of truth to Utah's motto "The Greatest Snow on Earth" and Janeene and Carl have made a point of getting their share. Aside from skiing, Carl's free time (and salary) has been sucked away by his newest hobby, nature photography. (In my day we called it PORNO Carl - Ed.) Otherwise he's been mostly hanging at home and playing in the gardens or hiking with an occasional trip to Hampton Bays, NY for some surf, sun, sand and fresh seafood. As a final note, Carlbacher wine cellar is complete and decently stocked so if you are living or traveling in the Bernardsville, NJ area and would like to share a bottle or ten, Carl and Janeene would love to see you.

Jason Redi got married last June to Laura Dilley, an MIT grad student in linguistics. They'd been already living together in a house they boughtthe year before in Belmont, MA. Jason is still working at BBN Technologies, and just got promoted to Division Scientist, which is the technical-track equivalent of a department manager. Jason is still working on research for mobile wireless "ad hoc" networks --specifically recently on a project that uses directional antennas, as well as a project that looks at networks for robots. (some more info available at www.jasonredi.com) Most of what he works on is DoD funded, which means that there has been no adverse effects from the recent economic slowdown. Laura has about a year and a half left before finishing her doctorate. Then Jason is hoping to retire. Laura and Jason have been spending a lot of time mountain biking, rose gardening and working on their 100-year old home. Building all those lofts and bars at 233 W. Packer really paid off! Please drop us a note when you are in the Boston area and we'll go out for beers.

John Kapp ('92) and his wife Ann-Marie are focusing on building their family. They have two sons, Justin Patrick and Evan Daniel, who were born on March 20th, 2000 and May 7th, 2002, respectively. On the employment front, Ann and John are working for Merck & Co.

Rob Zach also says his news isn't very exciting. The kids are growing like weeds- RJ just turned 6, Cameron,4, and Emily Jane, 2. Rob and Melissa just returned from a weeks vacation at the beach (LBI, NJ), where they loved the water, and brought half the sand home each day in their hair and bathing suits! It was a nice break for Robert and Melissa, as they have been working this summer on finishing the basement. They spent fourth of July weekend with a jackhammer, breaking up the concrete floor and a 2ft. diameter boulder that they found beneath it in order to put the bathroom drains in. Hard enough work without the hangovers they had from hanging out with the neighbors the night before! (That must mean you drank an entire beer - Ed.) Rob's division of Lucent was sold- the new company officially starts August 1st, under the old INS name! It's a second chance and making it prosperous in a start up. The division was purchased by a private investor and is being held that way. There is a plan to IPO but not until the economy recovers (whenever that is!). Melissa is anxious for September- RJ will start 1st grade, Cameron will be in pre-school, and she will go back to teaching at the nursery school three mornings a week.

Highlights from the past year:
Johnny Mac got married. A bunch of us made the wedding. An awesome reception made up for having to endure the two and one half hour church ceremony done mostly in Greek. John and his wife Tanya are living in East New York. John is Chief Council for the NY/NJ PBA, he gave me a little Card that identifies me as a "safe and courteous driver who supports the PBA" - it's probably saved me from about 3 or 4 speeding tickets in the past 2 years.
Rob Erman, George Darcy, Matt Weinman and me went down to Myrtle Beach in October for a week of golf. We all left the wives and kids home and rekindled the bond that we had felt since our college days. Hopefully we could do it again within the next 10 years.
Neal Quinter is living like a rock star down in Ft Lauderdale. He invites anyone visiting Florida to look him up. Jason Miller moved out of the city and into Jersey, thereby admitting that he too recognizes that somehow middle-aged is upon him.
Sadly I'm not in touch w/ Chuck, Peter, Jeff or John. But I'd figure that like me they think back fondly on days of wiffle ball, nights of pool parties and some of the best years of our lives where lifelong friendships were made and are renewed after years of separation as comfortably as slipping into a comfortable pair of well worn jeans.

People my age generally do not do too exciting things, except die. We retire, travel, have grandchildren, etc. but who wants to hear about that in the Dispatch?
Anyhow, having said that, here a little bit of "news":
A year ago, I became a Big Brother to a now 13-year boy who lives in a nearby town. We attend sporting events, play cards, bowl, fish and all that kind of stuff. Since we are in the car driving around a lot, he has to put up with my speeches on morals, bad drivers and other assorted idiots we all encounter in our daily lives. He is a challenge--but lots of fun.
Whitey DeYoung has retired for the umpteenth time (I think) and we have even seen him a few times the past year or so. If we can get him to stop traveling abroad and taking long salt water fishing trips we might even see him in the fall at our 50th celebration. Bill Jackson, who also travels a great deal, is retired and he PROMISED me that he would be back for the 50th. I have been leaning on him to bring his guitar and sing "Good OLE Mountain Due" but he is resisting. He was simply GREAT singing that song--even when he and I were sober.
Nancy and I get to visit with many alumni during the course of the year and it is interesting, and heart warming (if I can use this term), how little each of us has really changed (except physically, of course). The personality traits, etc., that were attractive 50 years ago have remained.
